The PADI Ice Diving course is an advanced specialty program designed for adventurous divers who want to experience the unique thrill of diving under ice. Ice diving provides an entirely different underwater experience, with crystal-clear visibility, surreal light effects, and an incredible sense of stillness that few other environments can offer. This course gives you the skills, knowledge, and confidence to dive safely beneath a solid ice ceiling, exploring a fascinating, yet challenging, underwater world.

During the course, you’ll learn specialized techniques and procedures for ice diving, including how to prepare and plan dives under ice and manage the specific risks involved. You’ll start with knowledge development sessions to understand the environmental conditions, equipment requirements, and the importance of team roles and communication when diving in such extreme conditions. Ice diving is a team-dependent activity, requiring surface support from trained tenders and safety divers who assist with lines and provide backup in case of an emergency.

The PADI Ice Diving course also covers essential skills for working with tether lines, which are critical for navigation and safety under the ice. You'll learn how to use line reels and communication signals to stay in constant contact with your dive team on the surface. One of the most important safety techniques you’ll learn is redundancy in equipment, such as using multiple air sources and redundant buoyancy systems. Handling these added complexities builds your confidence and helps you to stay calm under challenging conditions.

The practical portion of the course includes several supervised ice dives, where you’ll practice skills like entering and exiting the water, working with surface tenders, and managing buoyancy in near-freezing temperatures. During these dives, you’ll be tethered to a surface line, allowing you to explore the under-ice environment while maintaining safe contact with your team. The instructor will guide you through managing cold-water equipment, dealing with ice formation on regulators, and controlling your breathing and movements in the limited space beneath the ice.

The ice environment offers stunning visual rewards that few get to experience. Ice divers often encounter unusual light refractions through the ice, ethereal shades of blue, and the stillness of an enclosed aquatic world. Depending on the location, you might even spot cold-water marine life such as crustaceans, unique fish species, or other winter-resistant organisms.

To enroll in the PADI Ice Diving course, you need to be at least 18 years old, an Advanced Open Water Diver, and have previous experience in cold-water diving. While it’s a demanding specialty, it’s an incredibly rewarding experience for divers interested in exploring extreme environments. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to dive beneath the ice confidently and responsibly, opening up a new realm of diving that few ever experience.

Completing the PADI Ice Diver certification allows you to join dive teams on ice expeditions worldwide, offering you the chance to explore frozen lakes, arctic bays, and other stunning cold-water locations. This course is perfect for divers who are passionate about exploring the limits of recreational diving, offering you a truly unforgettable and visually mesmerizing underwater adventure.
